Located 66 km south of Alicante, the city is the southernmost of the Valencian Community, only 1 km north of the regional border (with the Province of Murcia). The town and its neighbouring villages (Pinar de Campoverde and Torre de la Horadada) are home to thousands of British, German and Northern European expatriates.  Flight access to the area is excellent with two main airports nearby. Alicante airport is a 35 minute drive away and Murcia airport is just 30 minutes. Pilar de la Horadada has a wonderful stretch of blue flag beaches with fine sand and clear waters covering four kilometers. The beach of Mil Palmeras Playa is popular with sailing and water sport enthusiasts, links the Rincon and Puerto inlets which has a fantastic promenade with shops, boutiques, restaurants and bars. During the summer months this promenade comes alive with the tourist throng. Las Villas Playa is the longest beach with a smaller beach at La Mojon. Worthwhile historical monuments which are places of interest are located in the town in the form of the local parish church, the Nuestra Señora del Pilar, and the Watch Tower which date from the fifteenth century.
